This is John Schumacher '66, one of the great friends of RPI of all time (as evidenced by the garden and park named after him behind West Hall). He returned to RPI in the early seventies to teach philosophy after earning his PHD at Oxford. He gave his heart and soul to old RPI until his too early death in 1999.
I still think of him all the time.

I tried to email you last week about this photo. It is John Schumacher, Class of 1966. He was a philosophy professor at RPI for many years. There is a park behind West Hall named after him because of his many contributions to RPI. He died of cancer in 1999. He was only 55.

Your right he was a very serious scholar. John A. Schumacker. PhD. Professor of Philospohy in STS (Science & Technology Studies). I believe he recieved his undergraduate and master's degrees from RPI also. My favorite memory of John was watching him jog up or down Spring Avenue with his prematurely gray long hair and ZZ Top beard both wrapped tightly in rubberbands like twin ponytails. He died young from pancreatic cancer and the Renssealer community lost and "old and wise soul".

Thanks for sharing the memory Jeanne! I didn't realize that he was an alum as well -- good to know. Everyone who has contacted me about this photo remembers Dr. Schumacher fondly.

I was a peer facillitator on campus in a program Prof. Schumacker ran and also was in a small class he ran one semester of about 4 people who met and talked about Psychology - it was "Sanity, Madness, & Society", and I can say that as a teacher Professor Schumacker had a large impact on me. I do remember him talking about spending some time at Oxford - so both accounts above are probably correct.

John was also the faculty adviser for Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity at RPI.
